“Adolescent Suicide Can Be Prevented”
May 19 Program at NAMI
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among those 15-24
years old. Most of us know a family affected by the devastating
consequences of suicide. At least 90 percent of people who kill
themselves have a diagnosable and treatable psychiatric illness –
such as major depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Yet
suicides can be prevented, especially through early and effective
interventions, and healthy development and treatment for children
and adolescents.
On Monday, May 19, NAMI Hamilton County presents “Adolescent
Suicide Can Be Prevented” – an educational program presented by:
- Dennis Walsh, Vice President of Outpatient Services at
NorthKey Community Care. Mr. Walsh will train participants in
the QPR Method (Question, Persuade and Refer). While many may
know what QPR stands for, most do not know what to say or do
when an adolescent is suicidal.; and
- Cathy Strunk, RN, suicide prevention expert at Children’s
Hospital Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry. Ms. Strunk
will give an overview of “Surviving the Teens” – Children’s
Hospital’s newest suicide prevention initiative. Surviving the
Teens provides information, resources, and support to help guide
teens through the ups and downs they may face.

Family-to-Family at the Urban League
Class Begins May 21
A 12-week Family-to-Family course
will be conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) -
Hamilton County, beginning on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, from 6:00 to 8:30
PM. The class, developed and maintained by NAMI’s national organization
in Washington D.C., helps family members and friends who have an adult
loved one with a serious mental illness.
“A burden has been lifted. I no longer experience the great
stigma of talking about a family member with a brain disorder;
better still, I am not worried about other family members or what
others may think. I now know that education is the key.”
(Graduate/Participant)
NAMI’s Family-to-Family course helps
family members and friends understand and acknowledge the struggles that
those with mental illness face, and learn how they can provide support
in a way that is good for everyone involved. The classes are offered at
no cost to the participants.
Mental illnesses covered in the class
include major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety/panic
disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.
The Family-to-Family class also includes
an overview of brain biology, medications, recovery/rehabilitation, and
workshops on topics such as handling crisis/relapse,
listening/communications skills, problem solving, and self care.
To Register: No cost for class, but please
call the NAMI-Hamilton County office at 513.351.3500 to register. Class
location: Urban League of Greater Cincinnati,
3458 Reading Road, Cincinnati, OH 45229
